I must say the EInk screen is not as strong as LCD. The vulnerability should be taken care of especially. Thanks to Amazon's instant customer service, a new replacement is delivered in only 5 days. The books purchased have to be downloaded again from the archives. Direct transfer from the old one doesn't work. While the collections is retained, personal documents require manual effort. Besides the broken screen, there are still other problems such the painting on the 5-way button which is peeled off after several months' use and a weird rattle inside. By and large, this is a desirable replacement. Even though there may be some e-readers made by vendors in China or Taiwan with lower prices than the Amazon Kindle 3, they hardly promise an instant replacement. Due to the vulnerability of the EInk screen, the warranty should deserve higher consideration than anything else.
Steps to request a replacement:
- keep the Kindle registered to your Amazon account
- contact Amazon Customer Service on the phone
- state the problem instead of the cause
- provide the account ID, shipping address, and credit card number
- after confirmation, wait for the email containing a pre-paid shipping label for return within 30 days
- there will be an order of the replacement placed in your account within 24 hours or so
NOTE:
- the couriers of the return and the replacement may differ
- both have tracking numbers
- 「Reset to Factory Defaults」restores the system and erases the storage
Same thing happened to mine and this was the replacement. Trying to find a replacement screen is almost impossible so I guess I am going to call Amazon and see howmuch they are going to rape me for.
