E-book reader devices such as Amazon Kindle get popularity for people who prefer paper-like reading experience. Why paper-like experience matters is because it comforts your eyes for long-term use. Nonetheless, limited computational power of e-readers makes it inefficient to read and annotate large complex PDF files. New screen technology providers such as Pixel Qi and Qualcomm (Mirasol) search for the best of both worlds but yet reach a success compared with LCD/AMOLED retina displays.
On the other hand, no matter what device is equipped with such advanced screen technology, it protects your eyes only when you read on the device and you may not have all your devices including TVs well-equipped with those advanced displays. Therefore, an alternative solution to long-term eye comforts regardless of devices is worth consideration. It is nothing new but a pair of robust and reliable computer glasses which shield your eyes from blue rays and other harmful light sources from digital monitors and smart devices all day. In my case, I opt for Gunnar Optiks eyewear but there are other options available. My comments follow.
- Prescription lens are only available in a limited rx range (the SPH in the prescription report) and cost one hundred bucks or more. You need to submit a copy of your prescription after placing an order. One thing you may concern is the thickness of the lens. Unfortunately, there is no hi-index option on their US website but owning to the limited rx range, the resulting lens thickness should not bother in practice.
- Computer eyewear styles or gaming eyewear styles? The concern here is about ear comforts with headphones. Computer eyewear styles usually hook over your ears so closely that long-term use of gaming headphones may cause discomfort to ears. However, you don't need to worry if the pair of glasses are gonna fly away when doing heavy sports. In contrast, the gaming styles work in an opposite way.
- Amber or crystalline? I got an official response saying that "the amber lenses filters more fluorescent light and reduces high-intensity blue light projected from digital monitors. The crystalline lenses provides all the same benefits as the amber lenses with the exception of enhancing contrast and shifting the color spectrum." The amber lens tint does not disturb the vision as much as expected.
- Compared with normal glasses, Gunnar Optiks lens are ultra-lightweight and come with a marginal magnifying effect, reducing the effort to see tiny and/or glittering things clearly.
- A prescription order may take more than 4 weeks to deliver. The tracking number on the website does not refer to the final shipping. So forget about it after placing the order.
Regards.
